You will forgive me putting in my two cents, since I have to deal with all this crap in med school.
this discussion merely points out that the major religous cult in the United States is NOT Christianity, but MEDICINE. Anyone who does not agree with the religous beliefs is a "nut". I am not saying that ALL medicine as practiced in the United States is altogether bad, although medcine as such is only allopathy, and really only fit to be used for emergency and anatomically based problems.
The problem is, it is NOT the only answer, and the American Medical Association is so profit driven and so political that any REAL science is lost. Other countries, such as European nations, use allopathy when appropriate, and only WHEN appropriate. For example, if you are in England, and your medical problem is not best addressed by allopathy, you will be referred to a homeopathic hospital. In China, which is, undoubtably, a politically backward nation, nevertheless if your medical problems are not best addressed by allopathy, you will be referred to a Chinese medical hospital (which is sometimes another floor of the allopathic hospital, it is so accepted). Our country is the only "civilized" country in the world where alternative or complementary medicine is inaccessable to most people, and treated as fringe or "crazy".
Allopathy as a religion does not allow "heresies", no matter how scientific. Sammelweis, who was the first doctor to say "well, maybe we shouldnt deliver babies after our hands are covered in blood and feces from previous surgeries" died in an insane asylum, driven from practice and generally mocked...yet he HAD shown that the death rate went down for mothers and their babies if proper handwashing was done. Dr Jaques Benveniste, who was an internationally renowned scientist, lost much of his career and respect from fellow scientists after he demonstrated that the microdilutions of homeopathy could work, even though his paper was scientifically valid and has never been effectively refuted.
People do not realize that those who do not follow the beliefs of the majority will be reviled in medicine, no matter how true they are. And scientists, even the "openminded" ones, are trapped within certain paradigms that they have been taught to "believe" in.
Incidentally, when I DID get up and say to my medical school class that the AIDS-HIV virus connection was only a "theory" everyone looked at me like I had six heads, but yet, it IS only a theory. No one ever tells you that it has never been demonstrated in a lab that the HIV virus kills T cells. Never. If this happens all the time, wouldnt we be able to demonstate it? We can do so with other viruses, and do so. (I have in the lab). Also, people are not aware that the immune system is very poorly understood, for example, much of immune theory depends on the existance of a "T-suppressor" cell, which, has not ever been seen by anyone. That is not to say it does not exist, but again, that would imply that our understanding of immunity is at best imperfect.
I would say that the jury is still out on this one, and I would recommend for everyone interested in this subject to read Peter H. Duesberg's excellent book "Inventing the AIDS virus" from which Troy got a lot of his information, and there is more in there that is definately thought provoking.
Incidentally, although this is off topic, I would point out that a 1999 study published in the British Homeopath showed that many of the patients treated for HIV with homeopathy tested negative in both ELISA and Western Blot after treatment, and NO side effects. Even if it is shown that HIV causes AIDS there are certainly better choices for people then are offered by this potlitcally allied profit driven alliance of allopathy and pharmacutical companies.
